RAMANAN NO MORE......

This morning (sunday, 13th June) i woke up early in my daughter's home in Chicago and logged in to check my mails. It has become a habit of sort to start the day with ramanan's mails to paniit yahoo group. And his mails are as refreshing, if not more, as the first cup of coffee.
So, when i saw the one liner from Ramesh, i just couldn't beleive it. For a few seconds i thought someone was pulling a fast one. I read that mail again and also the others on the subject. Finally, it sank in, that our dear ramanan is no more.
I hardly knew him on a one to one basis. Last time i met him was perhaps at the ISB meet a couple of years back. But, he had become a friend close to my heart, through his regular mails to the paniit. I enjoyed his style of writing, his wit and sense of humour, his ability to laugh at one's own plight, his deep conviction on social issues, his never say die spirit, his wisdom on display through his understanding of various issues.
Sometimes, i used to write to him, one to one on issues and opinions and he used to reply promptly. He used to address me 'Sir' , showing his culture and respect to me because i was his senior. Ramanan, in short, was a very dear friend.
He is said to have died in his sleep-- what we call 'anayasa maranam' , death in that way comes only to those whom Gods love dearly. The sudden death is a shock to his family and friends.
Dear friend, knowing your spirit, i am sure, you would be busy up there, spreading joy and message to those who are around you.
Dear friend, our group will never be the same without you and you would be missed by all of us everytime we read or write a mail in our group. You would live on in our memories for a long time to come.
This is my humble, inadequate, tearful homage to you.
MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE.

IITM - The Hindu - Mentoring Session @ May 15th

IITMAA & The Hindu organised a counseling program in Hyderabad yesterday, the 15th May. An amazing over 1000 turned up - may be more. Even the balcony in Ravindra Bharati was full.

Many Senior Alumnus spent the morning explaining, what to expect of each branch of engg & the key skills required. Then they answered wide range of questions.

There technical questions, questions on career prospects, how to plan a career, and was there even a questions on physical handicap. To which Sridhar answered that only very few cannot be surmounted - like colour blindness in aircraft certification.

Many dropped guard and used language they would use in the campus. Dr.Venugopal started off with - I am an IITian, so expect me to talk about myself first then the subject. That had the whole hall in splits.

The credits for the organisation were shared by Murali who lead along with many others like Srinivas, Praveen, Vasu, Kishore and many volunteers. It was an absolutely professional job with a bunch of researchers sitting in the background with their laptops picking up data from the internet to back up experiences of the counselors.

An insight into engineering and its careers

Alumni of prestigious institutions interact with IIT and NIT aspirants

Expert guidance: Resource persons at an interactive workshop held by The Hindu Education Plus interacting with students and their parents on Saturday.

Hyderabad: Follow your dreams and excellence, and not money, was the advice for the IIT and NIT aspirants from the distinguished alumni of those prestigious institutions even as they gave an insight into engineering as a course and a variety of options it throws up in terms of academics and careers.

Strong basics

The alumni were addressing the IIT and NIT aspirants at the counselling session organised by The Hindu Education Plus in association with Gajendra Circle, a subset of IIT Madras Alumni Association here on Saturday. The programme was inaugurated by the Hyderabad district Collector, Gulzar Natarajan. The event was sponsored by State Bank of India. Demystifying the IIT education, the galaxy of speakers, who are mostly successful entrepreneurs in India and abroad now, said the difference between IIT and NIT engineering from others is that students get to compete with the best in the country while having access to highly qualified teachers and world-class facilities. The brand name of IIT that gives them recognition across the globe is an added advantage for the job seekers or entrepreneurs. Whatever the course might be, students need to acquire strong basics in the core subjects.

The evergreen engineering courses like mechanical, civil and chemical will continue to provide newer and better opportunities to students in the job market, they said. “Whatever course the students take up, it all boils down to the hard work and effort the student puts to achieve excellence,” they said.

K. Ramchandra Reddy, CEO and co-founder of MosChip Semiconductor Technology pointed out that to be an ideal engineer a student should be willing to go beyond the course work. He said electronics engineers will have bright future with the ever expanding gadget market and innovations in it.

Civil Engineers will always be in demand in a growing economy like India, said R. V. Chakrapani, Managing Director of Aarvee Associates. India will see investments of Rs. 17 lakh crore in infrastructure projects in the next five years and it showcases the demand for civil engineers. Firm grip on basics, logical and analytical skills, visualisation, ability to work in a tea and social awareness are required to become a good civil engineer.

P. Venugopalan, Director, Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) who introduced students to Mechanical Engineering explained the opportunities in both private and government sector. Be strong in physics, maths and sciences because they form the basics, he said adding that Mechanical was the base of all core engineering subjects.

Computer jobs

About six million computer jobs will be available in the next five years said, Santanu Paul, CEO of TalentSprint explaining opportunities in the software sector. He wanted the students to follow excellence and a bright future will be assured. Specialisation subjects in computers like artificial intelligence, computer architecture, computer graphics and robotics will be in huge demand.

Nagesh S. Walimbe, founder of Zen Consultants said ideal chemical engineers should be passionate about chemistry, mechanical and bio-chemistry. “Clear concepts in chemistry, physics and maths are mandatory. Being an industry that has elements of chemistry, mechanical and biochemistry, you need to like these subjects to excel,” he said.

A knowledge panel consisting of Prof. Kesav Vithal Nori, Prof. P. Sriram, H.S. Kalsi, G. Sreedhar, V.A.Srinivasan, K.V. Ramana, Venkatesh – all distinguished alumni from IIT, and Ajay Antony answered questions of students. Neeta C. Rao, deputy manager of State Bank of India provided detailed information on education loans and special schemes available to IIT and NIT students.

The day started early. Nike woke me up @ 5:30. (bugger)

Naresh, me and nike started from kothi to paradise @ 6 AM

As usual, the hyderabadi IITH bus driver said he will reach paradise in 5 mins @ 6 AM.

We started @ 7:30 from Diamond point near paradise, picking up people on the way.

Finally after going through desert, crossing mountains, oceans and a few cows, we reached the metal factory where the current IITH campus is located.

Our first impression on seeing the campus was, "where is the campus?"

:) We were expecting huge labs, buildings, workshops, ad-block, library etc, etc.

We had to manage with one flat warehouse structured hostel "boys Hostel". And the real insti was 2kms away(which was the only multistoried(2) building they have!)

But the priority of the moment was quickly shifted to food ! (we were all hungry!)

We entered "the mess", and i was "macha, same seats as himalaya opp godav in iitm".

And to our surprise, paratha's and Chai-coffee glasses were also similar.

~ We quickly munched away the breakfast, took few snaps of noticeboards and moved to the Battle Zone.~~~~

Since we arrived a bit late, we adjusted our schedules a little bit.

We started off on a winning note with PAN IIT's Invincible TT team of Ashwini Chadda and Ajay Gupta - IItian team was like "jahanpannah tussi Great ho".

At the same time, in Badi Court, We were on a losing streak!

There badi insti no.1 was standing and making our teams run from one corner of the court to another. In 30 mins, we were 2 matches down.

(Pasha-Shailesh and Dinesh-Naresh both lost :P)

Somehow we managed to regain some lost pride when Godavari-Saraswati Combo of IITM (Mahek and Nimit) beat there team of Badi no.1 and Sports Secretary!!

~~Anyways this was just the beginning. ~~

The iitians were smart. They knew that our numbers were limited and participation would be a bit repetitive, so as the day progresses we will get tired. We moved to cricket after two games(TT and badi)

~~Cricket

LO. SHOCK OF THE DAY. We were asked to play with GLACE BALL. Naresh, who went to Gym for three days and had done extreme preparation for the Cricket match, almost ran away from the field. :P

We also came to know, that the IITH cricket team practices everyday from 7-9 in morning. They have been doing it for past 16 months.

We unanimously agreed to play with glace ball (although everyone was shit-worried about balls getting tampered in the process :P)

We won! (the toss) and elected to bat.

We had only one strategy in mind: if we do very badly, we will bat our innings and get lost. :)

The Team: Mr. X, Dinesh, Sanjay, Nimit, Arun, Mahek, Nikhil, Pasha, Ajay, Ashwini, Naresh and one IITH electrical Prof.

Somehow, We managed to put up 82 runs on board after a blistering, mind blowing and ball-saving 4-5 runs from two overs start, by our opening batsmen :P!

Mr. Extras top scored for our team. :D with 25% of the runs coming in extras :P only Two people managed to reach double figures. :P Most were happy to get out and pass the guard onto the next batsmen. :D

~~ But with only 82 on the board we were a bit worried. We started off well and picked up a few wickets in the first 3-4 overs, until there real batsmen began to dominate. We had a very high scoring over from sanjay and a never-ending over from Nike to cheer us up! Poor Naresh didn't get a chance to take ha-trick for which he had practiced in Gym for three days. :P

Khaled from IITH was the top scorer (i think) who was making fun of bowlers and hitting them all over the ground.

While we all were playing cricket, Shiv(Shivaldo) , madhu and few other pan-iitians were at war in Scrabble. They even had a few tit-bits -- small kids-- in there cheering squad. Kite-flying was also going on outside the boundary line.

~~ coming back to the match ~~ :) Sanjay's body line bowling troubled them for a while.

But in the end, we lost gracefully. They took much more time to win than we had anticipated. :P

~~ Lunch !! ~~ Roti's were exact photo-copies of iitm mess!

After lunch, we thought, we will play one game and head back.

We ended up playing Basket ball, football and Volleyball !

Basketball was new for many of us! we just wanted to have some fun! The real fun was the iitians were badly cheering for us and mocking there our mates! After sanjay scored our first points, people were religiously chanting, "sanjay ka tempo high hain!"

Football - Instead of 6-a-side, we played full ground 11-a-side. With high hopes on Shivaldo, Pasha(aniket), and Nimit, we kicked off the game. At the end of 30 mins, they scored 5 goals and ran 20 times more distance than us. We again came to know, these guys also practice for two hours everyday, religiously. The second half saw us returning with a few attempts on there goal ! But no glory for us!

And it was 5:30 PM. We were all very very tired. Wanted to go back to mess and get some grub! We ended up playing volleyball for 45 mins!!

Myaan. Playing half-a-dozen games in one day was tiring.

For a change, it was good exercise. Nice to meet new people and scared college students who were worried about jobs after passing :P !

Sanjay and U B desai(Director) finished off the day with a promise for more such games and meetings in future!

Nitin from IITH had made perfect arrangements and his day ended up being tagged as "uncle" by Sanjay's younger son :D

Queries on the Panel Discussion

The topic in contention for the panel discussion during the recent Pan IIT Hyderabad meet on 20th September at ISB was,

"How do we increase the no of IITs without compromising quality and diluting the brand?"

Not all the queries from the audience could be answered at the end of panel discussion because of time constraints, so here we present some of the questions from the audience which we collected back then which are open for discussion. 1) The first question is from Subodh, IIT Madras:

I see IIT's being mmodelled as COE (Centre's of Excellence i guess!!!), why not each IIT's have focus and do not duplicate each other? Can it not be a strategic direction IITs should take?

2) This is from Sandeep Giri, IIT Roorkee:

Rather than expanding horizontally - opening more engineering college, we should be expanding vertically - meaning absorbing at 10th class level!!!

3) Not sure who put this question :)

Why not improve the quality of existing Engineering colleges rather than investing on establishing new grassroot level IITs?

4) This one is from Srivatsava Sonkava, IIT Kharagpur:

Why is there no finishing school in any IIT?

5) This is from A Suresh, IIT Kahragpur:

It is accepted that we need to improve education system and infrastructure. Is expansion of IITs the panacea for our problems?

The panel has clearly accepted the shortage of quality faculty as well as standard of students is a concern. Hence instead of expanding IITs how about an Indian Institue of Education? This seems to be our main problem,

IIE can be for
-> New Faculty
-> Improvement in education systems
-> Ideas for innovation

6) This is from Gaurav Porwal, IIT Bombay directed at Prof. U. B. Desai:

The growth plans for IIT Hyderabad are very impressive in terms of the number of students and faculty. What gives you the confidence to achieve the numbers and in what time frame? As you know the well established IITs haven't been able to do anything close to it in 50 years.

7) This question if from Mallan Thangaraju, IIT Madras:

Engineers need fair degree of coaching in management education as engineers mostly end up as managers. Instead of engineers totally changing line and becoming marketing managers or finance managers!!!

8) This one is from Vishwanadha Kumar, IIT Madras:

In India, only 8 - 10 % students are admitting for higher education. So the suggestion is, taking students after 10th standard into IITs or any universities to decrease drop outs. The Indian governemnt was planning to train people for civils after 12th standard itself!!!

9) This one is from Rajesh, IIT Madras to Prof. U. B. Desai:

IITians are IITians because of the overall expirience they had at the IITs!!!

As said - it took 40 -5 0 yrs for the IITs to become global/perfecct. What aspects of current IITs are being learnt or documented to replicate in the new IITs? Like the student life.

10) This is form Naminder Dhir, IIT Kharagpur:

When Nehru had the vision to open IITs ina socialist environment, it shoudl definitely be possbile to scale up in a capitalist environment. Taking example of IT industry, see the wonders it has done to the society and made things possible that seemed unlikely.

IITs can definitely sustain themselves by involveing private corporates, IIT alumni and captains of the industry.

11) This one from Ravi, IIT Bombay is on Brand and Money:

Brand: There is certainly a need for scaling up, but why scaling up of IITs? This definitely decreases the brand value of IIT. WHy not build new institues and develop brands than using IIT's brand? Cadbury deosn't produce diary milk - 2 but it produces Eclairs, Perk etc!!!

Money: Use the money in giving it to profs rather than building new IITs.

12) This one is from Yugandhar:

What is it about the IIT education system that its pupils lack life skills? Do we blame the JEE system? By scaling IITs, are we not aggravating the problems along with the dimension?

13) The next is form Rajeshwari Ramanan, Scientist, CCMB:

Rather than having more IITs we could have polytechnics which will generate skilled labor which is the need of the day. Many of the lower end of the society cannot make it to IIT but could be trained in skills such as carpentary, masons etc.

14) This question is directed at Mr. A. K. Goel and Mr. Kannan:

The USO fund is built out of the revenue generated from Telecos to fund the building of the rural telecom networks. Is it not possible to charge a similar tax on all corporates and MNCs to fund faculty salary and state-of-art research?

15) This is from Jyoti Kumar, IIT Delhi:

When Pandit Nehru started IITs, there were already technical institues in India. He started IITs probably to test a new academic culture int he country. Today across the time that new academic culture has already been proven effective, isnt it time to change the culture of all older education system rather than blindly replicating a prototype model?

16) This is from Shailesh R Agarwal:

When we talk about student happiness, isn't it an expectation mdel and for a student entering IIT, the expectation is already set by society and not meeting it makes a student unhappy!!! What can be done?

The placement scenario in existing IITs is itself not that great, hwo will you adress this in new IITs? (Again Great 'Set' by expectation.)

17) This one is from Ashwani Kumar Gaur, IIT Kanpur:

'Student' point of view; What is driving students to IITs? BRAND -> It pays big bucks.

Why do you take 100 students int a department, say Electrical Engg.? Are they all going to be Electrical Engineers? NO!!!

Then why should they study huge books on 20 year old Technology? Free the Curriculum (Make the student choose his usbjects and diversify the subjects!!!)

18) And this one is from me, Sai Rahul, IIT Madras:

What are the pros and cons of creating new IITs and upgrading existing institutes/universities to IITs? Which would be a better approach? The second approach was successfully implemnted in case of IIT Roorkee in 2001.

Will add more questions when i get my hands on them. Until then, have fun with the present ones. The replies/opinons for the questions can be written as comments to the blog.

A Big thank you to all the Members for their unstinted support and encouragement to achieve what we all did ..i am very happy that everyone enjoyed the overall program as much as w all enjoyed the experience of putting it all together ..we submit however there were a few glitches but thats what the next occasions are for ..to improve upon them further

I thank each and everyone of us individually to show the energy and the perseverence to make it all happen as things fell into place one by one ..i was happier on the learning we all imbibed in this exciting journey over the past 3 weeks which got kicked of on the tea table of YATRI NIVAS ...rather than the end result --for the end result any way was a corollary to the efforts and perseverance of all .
Gaurav , Rajat , Aniket , Mahek , Nikhil ,nike ,Rahul , Neel , Surya ,Kamalakant and many more .... were the tigers who were let loose and they all came out with Flying Colors ..Thank you Ramesh and Ramanan for without your timely inputs , guidance and calm support --i think we would have had a possibly more iterative and difficult process --but achieve would have --as it was the combine will that drove us all on ..

We are now looking forward to the next step of registering the PANIITHYD association and creation of the bank account to allow us a legal --real world presence from the Virtual avatar which has shown Real , tangible results ..
Many more things to do , promises to keep to the community and society , and miles to go before we sleep !!

It was indeed a pleasant meet. I met some people whom I knew from before, made new contacts and hopefully get to know more people in the future. For me and some of my age guys, its not about networking but encouraging the younger ones to look at the world from a broader perspective.

As all of us know, Dr. Desai has a monumental task ahead of him with IITHyd. PANIIT should and must assist him in what ever way he needs help. His institute is in our backyard and definitely needs support. Yes, he has connections but we can also chip in. So please request Dr. Desai to join the egroup and post his comments/request. We can meet him when required to render help.

Secondly, the choice for the forum debate was out of date. Arjun Singh has decided and it is getting implemented. We don't have a say in it. Period. When I mentioned this to Ramanan he politely suggested that I should have said this before. Unfortunately I was out of town frequently without access to Internet. Anyway we got a chance to hear some very wise and successful people.

Another topic should be ENTREPRENEURSHIP in India - Success and Pitfalls.

Let us now focus on IITHyd and Dr. Desai.

Congratulations once again to Aniket and his friends for a job well done.

It has been a couple of years since I returned to India after working in the US for 22 years. Thanks to Ramanan who sent out a message regarding the PanIIT Hyd meet, I was able to know about this event and attend it. It was very well organized and my appreciation to all those who made it possible. It was a great opportunity to once again meet and listen to two of my former IAS colleagues, Mr. A. K. Goel and Dr. Jaiprakash Narayan both full of fire and vigor. Thanks to Sanjay for info on this group.

Prior to this he held the positions of Product Unit Manager and Group Manager at Microsoft Corporation and Product Manager at Novell. Prashant brings two decades of industry experience over a career that spans leadership roles in marketing, sales and development in United States and in India.

Mr. A.M. Kannan is currently the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at ISB. Kannan has over 22 Years of Industry experience in the area of Operations having worked in companies like BHEL, HUL and Tetra Pak. He has been in the field of education since 2002.

Mr. B. V. R. Mohan Reddy is the Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Infotech Enterprises Limited, Hyderabad. He began his career with DCM Group, then moved to MICO BOSCH, HCL and then to OMC computers as Managing director. Mr. Mohan Reddy is acknowledged to have pioneered the CAD/CAM culture in India. He then founded Infotech Enterprises in 1991 as a Technology Services and Solutions company.

Mrs Madhu began her career in IT and worked with TCS, Computer Point etc. According to her, she enjoys working with people and not machines. She began her career in Social service sector as Director, Sahaya in 1992. She then founded Roshni, a non profit organization that helps prevent Suicide and provides counseling and support to depressed people. She desires to do socially relevant cinema. She is currently doing a documentary film on IIT Gandhinagar.

Professor Uday B. Desai of the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay has taken charge as the first Director of IIT Hyderabad. He was Dean of Students Affairs at IIT Bombay from 2000 to 2002. He has held Visiting Associate Professor's positions at Arizona State University, Purdue University, EPFL, and Stanford University. From 2002 to 2004, he was the Director of HP-IITM R & D Laboratory at IIT Madras.

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, widely known as JP, is currently an MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) from Kukatpally constituency in Andhra Pradesh and the president of Lok Satta (party). He is also a former Indian public administrator, a social reformer and a columnist. He is well known for his role in bringing electoral reforms and for his columns on democracy in leading Indian daily newspapers.

The PanIIT organization was formed as an umbrella organization, covering alumni of all 7 IIT’s, to evolve a brand that would provide strong fraternity among IIT alumni. VISITING CARD DROP BOX: It was also decided that all alumnus attending the meet are to bring along with them there visiting cards to develop an inventory of pan iitians in various fields. This would help in future transactions and business.

PAN IIT Forms: Simple Registration forms to be filled by all alumnus for future notifications.(Future Employers/Employees know where to look for talent/openings with this)

PAN IIT HYD - ID CARDs - Once we have 500 entries(currently 250-300) we are planning to subscribe to various facilities like library memberships, club memberships, etc, etc.. !

The registration fees Rs. 300 will be collected your nearest PAN IIT representative. An e-pass will be generated and sent to your email ( it needs to be brought for the event).

ISB is badly awaiting our arrival!!

One of the things everyone is asking me before registering is - Is the event a social gathering or an academic one??

Well, I clearly dunno the answer myself, since i think its a mix of both.

We have a Panel Discussion of "Pancha Ratna" and we have a fun-skit competition between the iit's. So, ideally a mix of academic and social event.
